How I Spent My Summer Vacation

Posted on August 9, 2010 Written by The Nittany Turkey

Cupcake, Artificially Sweetened, and The Nittany Turkey

I recently returned from a fine, energizing—albeit debilitating—road trip which served as my 2010 summer vacation. Originally, I had wanted to scrawl out some private travel notes so my aging brain could remember it at a later time, but then I thought, “What the hell? Why not give everyone a dose of my literary narcotic.” So, here I am, giving you the sleeping pill you knew you needed.

Accordingly, I have decided to break up the travelogue into individual posts for each day of the journey. I will post pieces as I complete them. Just watch the category “Summer Vacation” for new installments. Of course, as I add segments, I will link them in succession.

I have to say that this summer vacation road trip differed from previous ones because it was not a solo sojourn or a bi-geekal man-o-rama. Our previous vacation was at Isle Of Wight, where stayed at this amazing cottage, you can check log cabin prices at Fairway Holiday Park Isle Of Wight if you would like to visit this cabin. We had an amazing time last year and we would love to go back to that beautiful cabin. Coming back to this year’s vacation, the artificially Sweetened (hereinafter referred to as AS), my friend, companion, and consort of the past three and a half years, whose schedule has heretofore precluded taking lengthy trips together, finally was able to join me for one. This one would work out to be about ten days. As our planning discussions progressed, we included AS’s oldest offspring, Cupcake. The other two kids were going to be visiting Grandpa during the same period.

Thus having established the “who”, “when”, and “why”, I took over the planning. I tried to ask AS about various options several times, but most of the time I got the same response: “We’ll go where you want to go.” I wondered if they would be happy with the non-spectacular agenda I had in mind. Although I was pretty sure that AS would like whatever I liked, I was concerned that Cupcake, a tech savvy vixen who is fourteen going on 21, would be bored out of her skull. However, AS told me to continue with the planning and that Cupcake would like whatever I decided but would never admit it. I remember when I was fourteen, when the family piled into the Model T for a spin (I think we did that once), I was indeed bored out of my gourd.

I could say that I spent many weeks doing the planning, but I actually did it in a couple of days. I knew where I wanted to go and what I wanted to see—mostly places I had been before but wanted to share with the significant people in my life. AS had seen some of the featured stops in North Carolina, but Cupcake hadn’t; meanwhile, neither had spent much time in Pennsylvania, and certainly not the places I would take them. My main task would be deciding where to stop and for how long. I decided to stay overnight in Asheville, North Carolina; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; State College, Pennsylvania; and, eventually, on the way home, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. The remaining time would be spent with my old friends (and I do mean old) Toejam and Judytam, in northeastern Pennsylvania—anthracite country.

That was the plan, and we adhered to it fairly tightly. However, we decided to spend a few hours in Washington, D.C. on our way back south from Pennsylvania to North Carolina.

As you might imagine, the nearly 3,000 mile, 10-day voyage was replete with twists and turns, wisecracks and made-up facts, new scenery for all but me, and supposedly, a break from the mid-summer Florida heat. Our travels began in my driveway on a Saturday. Our first stop would be Asheville.

In the next installment, I’ll bring you our first day.

Paterno nominated for Presidential Medal of Freedom

Posted on August 9, 2010 Written by The Nittany Turkey

Nittany Lions head coach Joe Paterno has been nominated for the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States by U.S. Representative Glenn Thompson (R-PA, 5th), who sent President Barack Obama a letter with 17 additional signatures asking that Paterno be rewarded for his efforts serving his team, school and community.

Does Joe deserve it?

This Turkey thinks so. He has touched the lives of countless thousands of young men in a myriad ways, inspiring them to great heights on the field and in the classroom while guiding them in their maturation as responsible and productive adults. He has donated millions of dollars of his own money to bolster the Penn State library, while raising literally billions in support for the Penn State endowment and the athletic program through the years.

But will he get it?

This Turkey thinks not. It would be nice to think that President Obama would transcend politics to do the right thing, but in this case what he’ll probably do is find a good excuse to give the medal to someone else, laying out a very well constructed rationalization that makes the whole thing seem perfectly legitimate. Why would he want to deny Joe? Simple politics. Paterno is a Republican who not only stood in nomination of George H. W. Bush in New Orleans in 1988, but also has publicly expressed his displeasure with the directions of the Obama Administration. He was nominated for the Presidential Medal of Freedom by a Republican congressman. The Obama White House, although paying lip service to the desire to reach across the aisle, has done little to convince us that this is anything but hypocritical posturing. Beside being of the wrong political persuasion and beside having been nominated by another Republican, Paterno’s selection might alienate voters in swing states like Ohio or Florida, merely because of football rivalries. Obama and crew (Axelrod, Plouffe, et. al.) know how to mind their political P’s and Q’s down to the last iota.

Still, there is hope. Although the nominations for the Presidential Medal of Freedom undoubtedly will be weighed and evaluated politically — because everything Obama does is a political maneuver — there can be some significant political benefit in naming the venerable coach the recipient. That Paterno is a Republican is well known, hence the award could be seen as “reaching across the aisle.” This Turkey is certain that this potential political exploitation will not be overlooked. Furthermore, Joe’s son and quarterbacks coach Jay Paterno is an active Obama supporter who campaigned vigorously for him in 2008. Although Pennsylvania typically votes Democrat, the unwritten rules of big-time politics mandate some form of quid pro quo. Finally, and by no means least significant, is that Joe flat out deserves the award, which has been won in the past by two of his contemporaries: Paul “Bear” Bryant and John Wooden.

There are multiple categories and, thus, multiple medals to be awarded in a given year. I cannot think of any reason why Paterno should not receive an award that most recently was given to Billie Jean King (2009, for political reasons that should be obvious to the keen observer). I would like to see him get it while he is still around to bask in its glow, unlike Bryant, who was honored posthumously. Therefore, I am hereby imploring my brother from another mother, my president who pledged to serve me even though I didn’t vote for him, my main man in DC, Barry Obama to do the right thing, not the safe thing or the politically expedient thing: Award Joe Paterno the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Turkey Trotting

Posted on July 23, 2010 Written by The Nittany Turkey

It’s vacation time in Turkeyland. The summer heat has withered this Turkey’s wattles, so I’ll be grabbing Artificially Sweetened and Da Cupcake and heading north for a while. Oh, sure, y’all have been in the throes of a heat wave up there for a while now, but at least the nighttime temperatures will be respectably sleepable.

I won’t be posting much, if anything, while I’m away from steamy Central Florida. When I return, I’ll dive right into to what appears to be a topsy-turvy season for the Nittany Lions.

I hope all of you are having an enjoyable summer and beating the heat in an enviable way.

Whodat Turkey?

The Nittany Turkey is a retired techno-geek who thinks he knows something about Penn State football and everything else in the world. If there's a topic, we have an opinion on it, and you know what "they" say about opinions! Most of what is posted here involves a heavy dose of hip-shooting conjecture, but unlike some other blogs, we don't represent it as fact. Read More…
