Hawkeyes or Birdseyes? Who Knows?

Iowa Hawkeyes (5-3, 3-2 Big Ten) vs. #20 Penn State Nittany Lions (6-2, 4-1)

Iowa HawkeyesA night game at St. Joe Stadium at Beaver, whether an officially declared white-out or not, is always a daunting prospect for visiting football teams as well as a raucous time for Penn State fans. On Saturday night, the newly bowl-eligible, 20th ranked Nittany Lions will host the well rested Iowa Hawkeyes, who are arguably the best of their remaining opponents.

A win over the Hawkeyes might mean the Lions could play in a New Year’s Day bowl in Florida as opposed to the mythical, metaphorical, mid-December Toilet Bowl in Kohler, WI, so the stakes are commensurately high. [Read more…]

Second Half Romp for Toilet Bowl Eligibility

#24 Penn State (6-2, 4-1 Big Ten) 62, Purdue (3-5, 1-4 Big Ten) 24

What looked like it would be an uncharacteristically competent first half in a noon road game quickly turned into a typical Penn State half-assed slow start. The opening drive of eight plays and 85 yards for a touchdown was what we have wanted to see for a long time. However, reverting to the road nooner syndrome, after that they fizzled, giving up 17 points to Purdue in the first half while adding another 10 points to wind up the half tied at 17. Both teams were putting the announced crowd of 33,000, which looked more like 3,300, to sleep.

Bowl eligibility. Yay!

#24 Nittany Lions Face Boilermakers in Noon Start

Purdue BoilermakersOur newly ranked #24 Nittany Lions (5-2, 4-1 Big Ten) travel to West Lafayette, Indiana for their high noon showdown with the Purdue Boilermakers (3-4, 1-3), who are coming off a 27-14 loss to Nebraska. Penn State is, of course, into irrational elation territory after its surprise, 24-21 victory over #2 Ohio State.

For Penn State, winning this game confers minimal bowl eligibility upon their beleaguered program, and they’ll almost certainly get a bid for a better bowl than would a less well-traveled team. On the other hand, the Boilermakers will need to win three of their remaining five games to establish eligibility. Aside from this game, which we’ll presume Penn State will win, select three from Purdue’s remaining opponents: Minnesota, Northwestern, Wisconsin, and Indiana. They better sharpen up their game in a hurry if they want to be a part of the post-season. [Read more…]
