The Nittany Lions got a New Year’s Day bowl, but they’re gazing at the “six” of the New Year’s Six. Not that they deserved the honor or anything, but I’ll have you know that the Gators, who were beaten by — guess who? Kentucky — got the Peach Bowl vs Michigan, who walloped Penn State, and you get it — I’m rambling.

The College Football Playoff Committee has done its job, elating some and pissing off others. Along with final rankings, they get to decide the big-ass, important bowl games’ combatants. The four who will compete for the SSMNC are #1 Alabama, #2 Clemson, #3 Notre Dame, and #4 Oklahoma. Also-rans who expressed various and sundry claims for inclusion were #5 Georgia, #6 Ohio State, and #8 UCF. (#7 Michigan knows better).
Rounding out the Top Ten are #9 Washington and #10 Florida. Bunched together at #10, #11, and #12 are the three highest ranked three-loss teams: Florida, LSU, and Penn State.
Penn State (9-3, 5-3 Big Ten) was a longshot to score a big-ass bowl, the Peachy Paterno Bowl in Atlanta being the best bet. Alas, that bowl went to Florida and Michigan. Elsewhere in big Big Ten games, everything will be coming up Roses for tOSU, who will play Washington in “The Grandaddy of Them All”. The next best bowl with a Big Ten tie-in is what is now called the VRBO Citrus Bowl, where PSU will play the #14 Kentucky Wildcats (9-3, 5-3 SEC) on January 1, 2019.
[Read more…]As predicted, it was a crappy day at half-full St. Joe Memorial Stadium at Beaver Alley, but the Nittany Lions exceeded most predictions in scoring and defending, putting an appropriate period at the end of their 2018 campaign. Now, they lurk in the shadows while watching Top Ten teams do their best to eliminate each other from CFP contention so PSU can back into a better bowl than the season’s performance deserves. More on some of those epic quasi-elimination games and more bowl speculation later.
The #12 Penn State Nittany Lions (9-3, 6-3) defeated the Maryland Terrapins (5-7, 3-6) by the lopsided score of 38-3 to close the 2018 regular season. It wasn’t as close as the score would indicate. ???? The Penn State defense has improved measurably, and the offense made a decent showing against a shaky Terp defense.
