The Nittany Turkey

Primarily about Penn State football, this is a tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

SDR: Mission Accomplished

Posted on October 13, 2019 Written by The Nittany Turkey

#10 Penn State 17, #17 Iowa 12

The Sanguinarian Day of Reckoning (SDR) produced thrills, chills, boredom, excitement, conspiracy theories, and optimism, as the undefeated Nittany Lions passed their first test of the season at the halfway mark. With many doubters predicting a Hawkeye outright victory, Penn State covered the spread by virtue of a(nother) Nate Stanley interception on a two-point conversion.

As for the Sanguinarians, they’ll live to crow another day. They will enjoy temporary bragging rights when, surely, PSU moves up in the polls. With two Top Ten teams above them having gone down in flames, PSU is liable to be #8 when this weeks rankings come out. (That will put three B10 teams in the Top 10, tOSU, Wisconsin, and PSU — all the more reason why crappy B10 officiating needs to be addressed so the conference doesn’t keep shooting itself in the foot. More on this later.) For now, the Sanguinarians can dream of knocking off the Schmuckeyes (completely looking past the intervening schedule) and then putting the clamps on Jonathan Taylor in the conference championship game. Bring on ‘Bama!

SDR: One Can Hope!

Iowa Hawkeyes

#17 Iowa Hawkeyes (4-1, 1-1) host #10 Nittany Lions (5-0, 2-0)

Iowa Hawkeyes

Let’s talk about Jonathan Sutherland’s hair, shall we?

No, let’s not. We need to stop wasting time on hair and start thinking about going 1-0 this week. Iowa, Iowa, Iowa, Iowa. And guess what? Iowa.

I’d rather talk about what happens on the football field when these two teams get together. ????? ??? ?????? Who can forget the 6-4 classic in 2004? You can’t, because I won’t let you. Read about it here.

Last time out, Iowa played defense against Michigan, and wound up on the short side, 10-3. If Kirk Ferentz takes a cue from the defensive brain trust at Purdue, their more effective defense can nullify the deep threat, leaving our dudes with the unenviable task of trying to score 10 points. That is, unless our coaching geniuses figure out how to nullify the nullifiers. All in all, it looks like a defense-oriented game. ???? ???? ?????? I’ll tell you right off the bat, I’m taking the under. Nevertheless, this is where the Nittany Lions either prove themselves worthy of that Top Ten ranking — or they don’t.

You Don’t Say!

Posted on October 6, 2019 Written by The Nittany Turkey

#12 Nittany Lions (5-0, 2-0) 35, Purdue (1-4, 0-2) 7

The expected win over Purdue played out, but with an unexpected twist of the nooner script. The mighty Nittany Lions came out strong, scoring 21 first-quarter points, then fizzled. With my viewing pleasure in mind, I would have to rate the final three periods of this one a snoozer.

In fact, I was more engrossed in the Iowa-Michigan game on the soundless alternate screen, which was contested until the end. Not that it was any kind of a masterpiece of fine play or anything, which it wasn’t. But it had the appropriate elements to maintain my attention, while the Penn State game didn’t.

Am I complaining? Yes and no. You don’t say!

Whodat Turkey?

The Nittany Turkey is a retired techno-geek who thinks he knows something about Penn State football and everything else in the world. If there's a topic, we have an opinion on it, and you know what "they" say about opinions! Most of what is posted here involves a heavy dose of hip-shooting conjecture, but unlike some other blogs, we don't represent it as fact. Read More…
