The Nittany Turkey

Primarily about Penn State football, this is a tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

To Be or Not to Be

Posted on August 11, 2020 Written by The Nittany Turkey

That is the existential question of the week for Big Ten football. While yesterday all indications (and most rumors) pointed to a complete Big Ten shutdown, today we’re not so sure. The Big Ten presidents are meeting as I write this. Who knows what could result?

Pushback to the leaked story by Dan Patrick and the Detroit Free Press has been considerable. Jim Harbaugh has gone public stated that he wants to play football. So has Ryan Day. Our man in the hot seat, James Franklin, has tweeted the same. And Scott Frost of Nebraska defiantly states that Nebraska will play, even if it must play outside the Big Ten. The players want to play, and they have been quite vocal about it on social media.

Oy vey, an insurrection against their presidents and chancellors, already. These guys have the balls we fans want them to have, leaning on the “culture of football” more than anything else. Of course, the University of Facebook has all the answers. If you want the definitive truth, just go there for the erudite, crowd-sourced take on the situation. Yes, that was sarcastic.

So, listen, I apologize for jumping the gun like everyone else. My current stance is wait for the minute-by-minute developments to unfold.

There is some indication that the Big Ten presidents might reconsider the vote they said they didn’t do and let the season run. The start could be postponed. Additional medical testing and precautions could be added. That thing better have numbers on it!

Let’s see what comes out of the 10:30 meeting.

The ESPN wonks, led by hometown girl Heather Dinich, analyzed the current situation for all the Power Five Conferences as of this morning.

Penn State football

Will the Penn State 2020 football season be over before it begins? A report by Dan Patrick proclaims that Big Ten presidents and chancellors have already voted to shitcan the conference’s season. ??? 365

Penn State football

According to Penn Live, the only thing that might be holding back the official announcement by the Big Ten is the desire to make a simultaneous announcement with another major conference, most likely the Pac-12. They’re not awake out there yet.

Reports say that the vote was 12-2 against playing football, with only Iowa and Nebraska dissenting. ???? ?????

And so we wait. We won’t have to wait too long to know for sure.

Of all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these: what might have been. ?????? ??

No Fans in the Stands

Posted on August 6, 2020 Written by The Nittany Turkey

Penn State Athletic Director Sandy Barbour

With the revised football schedule commencing in less than a month, Beaver Stadium season ticket holders have been apprised of their options by Mistress Sandy Barbour. Right now, the plan is for no fans to attend Penn State home games.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf has restricted outdoor gatherings to 250 people, hence the decision by Barbour, who went on to say, “Therefore, under the current conditions and current state orders, our fall sports events would be conducted without fans in the general seating areas of our facilities. We continue to work with the Governor’s office to discuss, and possibly be prepared for the opportunity to have spectators at our fall Penn State sporting events.”

Sandy offered three options to season ticket holders:

  • Convert the 2020 season ticket purchase into a tax-deductible donation
  • Roll over to 2021 season tickets
  • Request a full refund

Read Greg Pickel’s Penn Live story.

I suppose this is a reasonable approach, giving people a nice range of options. Ticket holders can take a chance on the situation in Harrisburg loosening up if they wish. Otherwise, if they don’t want to gamble, they can get a full refund.

Whodat Turkey?

The Nittany Turkey is a retired techno-geek who thinks he knows something about Penn State football and everything else in the world. If there's a topic, we have an opinion on it, and you know what "they" say about opinions! Most of what is posted here involves a heavy dose of hip-shooting conjecture, but unlike some other blogs, we don't represent it as fact. Read More…
