The Nittany Turkey

Primarily about Penn State football, this is a tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Something to Cheer About

Posted on December 9, 2007 Written by The Nittany Turkey

Just because Penn State wound up in a minor bowl this year, many fans are using the F-word (that’s “failure”) to describe the program. It’s nice to aspire to a BCS bowl every year and it’s even nicer when Penn State actually makes it to one. However, we have something else to cheer about and that’s Penn State’s academic success rate, which based on certain measures would have put the Nittany Lions in the mythical Academic BCS title game this year. Their opponents would have been Boston College. These are two excellent football programs with the distinction of being better than everyone else in the way their players perform academically. So says Lindsey Luebchow in the Patriot-News this morning:

Unless we are prepared to adopt a purely mercenary approach to college sports — and perhaps pay players rather than perpetuate the charade of the student-athlete — we should recognize that the future of most college football players depends on getting a college degree, not on securing an NFL contract.

We should care [that] only 32 percent of Texas football players leave campus after four or five years of playing football with a degree. And we should applaud the 72 percent of Penn State players who leave with a degree. Even more important though, we should care about ensuring that Penn State and all colleges and universities provide all of their students with the skills needed to get a good job. A college’s job is not simply to graduate students; it is to educate them.

Read this excellent piece here.

Let’s not forget what the university’s true mission is. Let’s not forget college football the way it was before television and corporate sponsorship. I’m fortunate (in a way) that I’m old enough to remember those things. I recognize that I’m an anachronism. However, I hope I don’t stand alone when I say that I would prefer to think of Penn State as a distinguished institution of higher learning first, and as a football team second.

The Turkey Trots to a New Home

Posted on December 8, 2007 Written by The Nittany Turkey

Well, a new URL, anyway. I decided to give The Nittany Turkey its own new home, so please change your bookmarks and other links to point to http://www.nittanyturkey.com. I have installed a permanent redirect at the old location, so all the old bookmarks and links will continue to work indefinitely just in case you forget to change them.

I’ve been wanting to make this move for some time now, but until tonight I had been too lazy to do it. ???? ???? ????? While I’ve tried to think of everything that could possibly break, there’s always something that slips by me, so please apprise me of any glitches you encounter. ???? ?????? ????

This is the first step in my planned make-over for The Nittany Turkey. The page design is getting a little long in the tooth, so one of these days you’ll see a big change. Just when that will be I can’t tell you yet. ????? ?????

Thanks for your readership and Merry Christmas from the Turkey.

Schiano Turns Down Michigan

Posted on December 7, 2007 Written by The Nittany Turkey

The Newark Star-Ledger reported today that Rutgers head football coach Greg Schiano has turned down the prestigious head coaching job at the University of Michigan. Schiano had previously nixed a $2.2 million offer to be the head coach at the University of Miami (Florida). His current job at Rutgers pays $1.7 million.

Michigan is no doubt shocked that Schiano would shun their vaunted program. However, the bigger story from the Penn State angle is whether the ex-Penn Stater is hanging around waiting for the inevitable Paterno retirement.

Rutgers is a fine program, which has advanced significantly under Schiano, but one has to wonder whether Schiano knows something we don’t know about the Penn State job. After all, a $500,000 raise is nothing to sneeze at. Turning it down has to mean there is something big in the offing. If it wasn’t the Miami job or the Michigan job, then what? Has Schiano been tipped off by the powers that be that Paterno will not be accorded the opportunity to realize his previously stated aim of coaching “another 3, 4, 5 years” after his current contract expires following the 2008 season? If not, why would Schiano not pick the immediately available cherries.

Of course, this cynical Turkey further wonders what kind of a salary the Board of Trustees would be willing to offer Schiano, were he to actually contend for the presently nonexistent Penn State head coaching opening, given that its present occupant is earning barely more than $500,000.

Whodat Turkey?

The Nittany Turkey is a retired techno-geek who thinks he knows something about Penn State football and everything else in the world. If there's a topic, we have an opinion on it, and you know what "they" say about opinions! Most of what is posted here involves a heavy dose of hip-shooting conjecture, but unlike some other blogs, we don't represent it as fact. Read More…
