The Nittany Turkey

Primarily about Penn State football, this is a tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

NCAA to lean heavier on rule breakers

Posted on October 30, 2012 Written by The Nittany Turkey

Whut? They’re going to do whut?

Yeah, that’s right. Today the NCAA board of directors approved a collection of severe penalties for “the most egregious infractions,” including postseason bans of two to four years and potential million dollar fines. Also, coaches can face suspensions for violations committed by them and their staffs.

“The most egregious offenses” stands out in the above commentary. Note particularly the superlative. Then note the range of punishment. Stir slowly and increase to boiling as you compare the punishment for the “most egregious offenses” with what Penn State received for offenses that arguably didn’t even involve athletics.

Furthermore, they couldn’t suspend Paterno, who was dead at the time, so they did the next best thing. They took away his wins. But I digress.

According to an ESPN article on the subject:

The vote ends a movement that started in August 2011 during the midst of one of the most scandalous years in college sports history. NCAA President Mark Emmert was so concerned that he asked dozens of university leaders to join him at a presidential retreat in Indianapolis.

It was then that Emmert, along with school presidents and chancellors, said they were going to get tough on those who refused to play by the rules.

Now they have.

So, what, I wonder will happen to UNC now.

Nothing, I bet.

More on the UNC fiasco

Posted on September 12, 2012 Written by The Nittany Turkey

I missed this SI story by Michael Rosenberg, originally published on August 31, about the NCAA exonerating UNC because there was nothing wrong with giving phony grades to athletes pretending to be students. I’m kind of glad I just read it, because the readers’ comments add some insight, some spice and, of course, some Penn State hatred.

The story highlights:

  • How can NCAA justify its lack of action with UNC, but its punishment of others?
  • UConn admitted its academic failures, paid the price; UNC gets away scot-free
  • The NCAA has shown that it only cares about money and competition, in that order

The fact that UConn paid the price kind of shoots a hole in my theory that UNC got away scot-free because of the money they pull in for the NCAA basketball tournament, inasmuch as the UConn basketball program was also involved, and the punishment precludes the Huskies from participating in the 2013 tournament. On the other hand, one of the commenters stated that one of those making the decision not to do anything about UNC happened to be a UNC alum.

So, there’s a little more fuel added to the flaming NCAA saga.

AIA Released

Posted on August 30, 2012 Written by The Nittany Turkey

Curley Joe, Moe, and Larry
Per the terms of the Athletic Integrity Agreement, Curly Joe, Moe, and Larry are busy modifying the Penn State showers to provide for direct communication to the NCAA when any nudity is detected.

As required by the Consent Decree of July 23, 2012 between Penn State and the NCAA, the Athletics Integrity Agreement is now a reality and it has been released to the public after a month of diligent effort. I’ve made a copy of it available here for your perusal. This copy must have been pre-signed by Jim Delany, commissioner of the B1G; the lines for Hot Rod Erickson and Deutschmark Emmert are blank. Yeah, blank is a good description.

I haven’t had a chance to read it yet — I’d have no objection whatsoever if someone wants to abstract it and summarize it in the interest of saving me the trouble. Otherwise, if you have any comments on it at all, I’d love to read them.

Whodat Turkey?

The Nittany Turkey is a retired techno-geek who thinks he knows something about Penn State football and everything else in the world. If there's a topic, we have an opinion on it, and you know what "they" say about opinions! Most of what is posted here involves a heavy dose of hip-shooting conjecture, but unlike some other blogs, we don't represent it as fact. Read More…
