The Nittany Turkey

Primarily about Penn State football, this is a tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Healthy Arrogance?

Posted on October 5, 2009 Written by The Nittany Turkey

Those of you who have read my stuff for any length of time know of my ongoing frustration with the medical industry. I need to blow off some more steam about it. This is not a political post, though. While it is my belief that if the government gets involved in health care any more than it already is, they’ll screw it up even more, I’m not going to get into that here. The present state of affairs in provider-patient relationships at issue here, not how it got to where it is.

Why do we accept being pushed around by the health care industry? Others providing services to us could never get away with the arrogance and lack of basic business courtesy. (Well, except for home repair and remodeling contractors. They don’t seem to give a damn, either.) I believe that our system promotes this type of behavior. For most Americans, health insurance comes from the employer, who pays most of the premium. Doctors and hospitals bill the insurance company, not us as individuals. Thus, in many cases, health care providers view the insurance companies and the government (in the case of Medicare patients) as the customer, and patients as transport devices for the all-important insurance or Medicare card (check out Medicare Benefits). This is not true of all practices, but it is certainly an easy rut to slip into for many of them.

With that buildup, you have to be thinking that I have been annoyed beyond the breaking point by some egregious sin committed by a doctor or treatment facility. Well, two things got on my nerves this week. Taken individually, or perhaps even together, they seem like the type of minor annoyances that most of us routinely accommodate — just because that’s the way it is. Again, I ask, why do we tolerate it?

Aha! So that’s it.

The Turkey got a call from his genial old veterinarian’s office today, advising this foul fowl that his TSH was too high. Let me gobble that to you in English. My thyroid gland is curtailing its regulatory activities. (I wish the government would follow my thyroid’s lead.)

So, that explains it!

I looked up hypothyroidism on the Internet (which has supplanted all other sources of medical information because of its convenience and ease of searching). Once I got through a plethora of ads for thyroid supplements and various other forms of folk medicine, testimonials by hysterical yet knowledgeable ex-hippies about herbal concoctions, rants about mercury in childhood immunizations, offers to recharge my thyroid with iodine for less than $10 per month, and hucksters pushing remedies that remove up to 25 pounds of waste material that coats my intestines like spackle or paste, I found some good information on the Mayo Clinic site. I should have gone there first, but then I wouldn’t have obtained the latest fecal spackle information. Alas, I digress pastily.

Site Redesign

Posted on September 28, 2009 Written by The Nittany Turkey

As you might have noticed, The Nittany Turkey has changed cosmetically. Everything that was here before is still here; the contents are merely arranged differently. I needed an extra column to squeeze in all the stuff I want and I wanted an updated look that would not resemble about 30% of the hosted WordPress blogs out there using the same default theme as I had.

The old look was getting to be pretty stale. However, I’m still in love with the header I created for the old blog, which I’m trying to figure out how best to work into the new layout. In the meanwhile, you’ll have to put up with the plain text and no visible turkeys or Penn State logo items.

The featured photos on this page are all taken by me, including some from 45 years ago, when I was at Penn State. A different one should come up each time you refresh the page. Later on, I might crank a Flash slide show into that space, but for now, static pictures are what you get.

Please let me know if you encounter any problems with the new design.

Whodat Turkey?

The Nittany Turkey is a retired techno-geek who thinks he knows something about Penn State football and everything else in the world. If there's a topic, we have an opinion on it, and you know what "they" say about opinions! Most of what is posted here involves a heavy dose of hip-shooting conjecture, but unlike some other blogs, we don't represent it as fact. Read More…
