I used to like watching the Grammy Awards. The annual show always exposed me to new music and new performers.
I’m so over it.
This year’s 3.5 hour borefest (including about 1.5 hours of commercials) included enough awards to have paid tribute to just about everybody in the music world and a few outside it. What’s next? An award for Best Cleaning Performance by an Illegal Immigrant Janitor Cleaning a Men’s Room during a Tejano Performance?
A couple of years ago, we had the hit gay TV show Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, and it seemed like every other episode of one of the eighteen hyperpolitical Law & Order variations had some issue concerning homosexuality. Will & Grace was funny for its first couple of years, but it overstayed its welcome by a longshot. Megan Mullaly was the funniest thing about that sitcom—how much of her can one take? However, now it looks like gay is out, at least TV-wise, and this stupid fad is done for a while. (I expect that it will return, but the novelty will have worn off and it will be rejected by most viewers as typical Hollywood political machinations. Say what you will, but 5% is not a very large voting bloc.)
So, what’s the latest human anomaly that’s “in” in Hollywood?
Midgets.
The title of this post is a line that is—or was—in a Dodge Caliber commercial that has been hitting the airwaves for a couple of months. Apparently, the tiny but vocal “gay lobby” and their much more extensive knee-jerk contingent once again have been offended by “hateful words,” prompting at least one network to air a censored version of the commercial with the spoken line “silly little fairy” chopped out of it. While on the surface it might appear that they have a point, in context this phrase is innocuous. Let me describe the uncut commercial first, after which I’ll add some bombast about how it was chopped, why it was chopped, and how I feel about the butchery.
