The Nittany Turkey

Primarily about Penn State football, this is a tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Mooooooooooooooooooooooo U.

Posted on November 16, 2006 Written by The Nittany Turkey

Where has the season gone? It seems like just yesterday when this Turkey was pissin’ and moanin’ about the summer football drought and now here we are, about to close out yet another season. So, as has been our annual tradition since joining the Big Ten in 1993, we end the year with the Land Grant Trophy game against Michigan State, better known as Moo U.

Land Grant TrophyIf you have never gazed at the Land Grant Trophy (left), take a good look. Click on the thumbnail at left to see a larger picture of this monstrosity. ???? ?????? (The big one is too ugly to post on this page, and it might scare small children.) Ain’t it a pisser? To paraphrase Chico Harlan of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, it looks like a Rubik’s Cube that has spent an hour in the mouth of a rottweiler. To this Turkey, it appears to have been designed by committee—in the fourth grade art class at McCabe Elementary. OK, enough about this hunk of —

Paterno Gets Game Ball As PSU Steamrolls Temple

Posted on November 12, 2006 Written by The Nittany Turkey

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA, November 11 — The Nittany Lions (7–4, 4–3 Big Ten) blanked the hapless Temple Owls (1–9) by the biggest margin this season, 47–0. Temple is so bad that this Turkey cannot extrapolate anything on the basis of this game. Whether the Lions can beat Michigan State next week is still a big question.

One thing is for sure: PSU hasn’t solved any of its offensive problems. Morelli still stares down receivers and gets intercepted. The offensive line still sucks. Receivers still drop catchable balls. The offensive unit still stalls in the red zone, even against the worst damn defenses in organized football. Today, they still could convert only five of thirteen third downs. Today, they still turned the ball over twice. They still look out of sync, as if this were September, not November. So, we cannot glean much from this game other than business as usual for the damn offense.

Just How Bad Is Temple?

Posted on November 10, 2006 Written by The Nittany Turkey

In a comment to my Temple prediction, 2theLion noted that I was off-base in impugning Temple’s offense. Her comment was valid, because I had asserted that the Owls “…[have not] had much luck scoring points on offense lately…” As 2theLion pointed out, they have indeed scored 75 points in the past three games. However, a closer look reveals that the number of points scored by the Owls is misleading.

So, I’ll break down Temple’s schedule thus far, letting you know at what point in the game they scored their first points and what the opposition’s lead was at that time. ?????? ????? My implication is that on most occasions when Temple scored it was essentially “garbage time” after their opponents had jumped out to big leads.

Whodat Turkey?

The Nittany Turkey is a retired techno-geek who thinks he knows something about Penn State football and everything else in the world. If there's a topic, we have an opinion on it, and you know what "they" say about opinions! Most of what is posted here involves a heavy dose of hip-shooting conjecture, but unlike some other blogs, we don't represent it as fact. Read More…
