Primarily about Penn State football, this is a tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Redd Sails into the Sunset (Updated)

Posted on August 1, 2012 Written by The Nittany Turkey

Penn State tailback Silas Redd will transfer from Linebacker U. ??? ???? ???? ????? to Running Back U. Redd is heading to USC after spending much time with coach Lane Kiffin and quarterback Matt Barkley over the weekend.

I’d say “details forthcoming”, but I’ll leave that to ESPN and the sports news wonks. There’s really not much more to be said, other than we here at the Turkey wish Silas the best of everything for a successful future at Southern Cal and beyond. We knew he was going to be a great one when he first set foot on the field. ???? ???? ????? ??? ????

Back in his Connecticut home area, The Stamford Advocate had the best coverage.

Bill Belton will probably be sucked up the depth chart into the vacuum at the first-string slot left by Redd’s whirlwind courtship and elopement with USC. Belton is not the pure runner that Redd is, but he adds a weapon as a pass receiver.

This evening, tight end Kevin Haplea, who has two remaining years of eligibility, has left the program and he might transfer to Florida State, putting a crimp in Bill O’Brien’s tight end oriented offense. He was listed as second string in the depth chart at the “F” tight end position. ???? ?????

So, add Redd and Haplea to the list of NCAA sanction casualties. We also learned today that Khairi Fortt was considering a transfer to Cal. We’ll know whether he, too, will be sailing into the sunset along with his old pal Silas by the end of this week.

Then, of course, there’s all-around kicker Anthony Fera, who previously put the team on notice that he might consider a transfer to his home state of Texas, if UT needs him.

Previously, quarterback Rob Bolden was released from his scholarship in order to pursue a transfer to LSU and safety Tim Buckley transferred to North Carolina State.

I would say that it will be a “lean and mean” team when the dust settles, but I only feel confident about the “lean” part of that cliché — unless something wonderful happens in the next 3o days! I’m still looking forward to the season starting, though.

Lean, indeed, but we could have a debate about the “mean” part. There’s a helluva lot of spirit and leadership among the remaining inmates. Look particularly to Mauti and Zordich; if you haven’t seen their video from last week, check it out. I think we’ll see a lot of sheer guts and determination from this team.

I wish no ill will or good luck to Redd-he did what he did for his own personal reasons, although I guess to me if this was your “dream” school was the possibility of playing for a National Championship the deciding factor? It certainly wasn’t going to happen at PS even before all of this crap happened. He certainly was going to be the feature back at PS so I’m not sure if that was the tipping point. USC has already started the Heisman campaign for Barkley, so I don’t think he was going to supplant him as their “chosen one”.

Perhaps one of the USC Song Girls was looking for a roommate or they found a way to get a nice house for his parents without alerting the NCAA ala Reggie Bush!

Either way it’s over; nothing more to see here people move on, move on.

Perhaps with his departure, Dukes and Lynch will decide to stay with the team as the possibility exists for significantly more playing time for them.

I don’t dispute the leadership and attitude of the remaining lions, but I think it’s going to be hard to maintain that intensity over a 13 week season, especially if they face injuries to some key players, which I think we all understand is inevitable.

    If you’ve been keeping score;

    Redd-transfer to USC
    Bolden-transfer to LSU
    Buckley-transfer to NC State
    Haplea-transfer to FSU
    Pollard-transfer to Rutgers
    Nowicki-transfer to somewhere

Then you’ve got Fortt, Fera and probably a few others that are still on the fence, but this will be over by Monday, as the NCAA transfer rule in this case says you can’t start summer practice with one team and then play for another in the same season and keep your eligibility for that season. So I think we’ll pretty much know the roster when the guys report to camp on the sixth.

We’ll probably see another round of defections at the end of the season (thank you again NCAA for the gift that keeps giving) when kids find out where the stand on the depth chart, how much playing time they got or whether the season was a success or a disaster.

I think this BS finally ends with the beginning of 2013 preseason camp.

I do admire the courage and character of the guys who remain, especially the freshman and those who have recently re-committed for 2013. They recognize there is something bigger going on here other than football and want to be a part of it. Perhaps this is why I was disappointed in Redd’s decision as I thought these were character traits that he exhibited in his time on campus.

    Oh well!

Whodat Turkey?

The Nittany Turkey is a retired techno-geek who thinks he knows something about Penn State football and everything else in the world. If there's a topic, we have an opinion on it, and you know what "they" say about opinions! Most of what is posted here involves a heavy dose of hip-shooting conjecture, but unlike some other blogs, we don't represent it as fact. Read More…
