Regular Season Bragging Rights

Posted on November 28, 2010 Written by The Nittany Turkey

OK, guys, fess up—who got this Penn State season right and who went down in flames?

For a change, this Turkey was right on the money with his season forecast as expressed in “The Long Road Ahead” last August. Bragging rights accrue to the Nittany Turkey. To the victor belongs the spoils.

My regular season won-loss prediction was 7-5, right on the old beameroonie. I wrote that that record would be good enough for a fourth place finish in the Big Ten. Lo and behold, it was so! I successfully predicted the losses to Alabama, Iowa, Ohio State, and Michigan State; however I slightly fumbled the ball when I predicted that the remaining loss would be to either Michigan or Northwestern instead of lowly Illinois.

I incorrectly predicted that McGloin would be the starter for the Youngstown State game because I felt that Bolden and Newsome were in no way ready to play. I suppose the coaches had to wait for a while to figure that one out for themselves. They didn’t bother to ask me.

I predicted that Joe Paterno would get his 400th—all right, I know this one was a mathematical slam-dunk—and I expressed doubt about whether reaching that number would induce him to retire. He got to 401, and he ain’t retiring, at least for now.

Then, I jokingly wrote that the Lions would turn down a Motor City Bowl Bid, then added that they were likely to get a warm weather bowl due to their huge following who bring big bucks. Chances are that they’ll be invited to the Gator Bowl (or perhaps the Outback Bowl, in view of Iowa’s tragic loss to Minnesota), so that waffle looks good, too.

I expressed concern about the linebackers, which didn’t take a genius. Mauti proved to be worthy of Linebacker U., but none of the others impressed me. Neither was a savant necessary to predict troubles for the offensive line, which I felt would hinder both the running and passing game. For some reason, though, the pass protection wasn’t absolutely awful, but the run blocking was abysmal.

On the other hand, I didn’t mention the defensive line at all in my prognostication. I thought it would be solid. I had expected a big year from Jack Crawford, at least. No such luck. The defensive line struggled. The whole front seven struggled and tackling was Pop Warnerish. The McCabe sisters could have wrapped up people better than Colisanti and Gbdayu. ????? ???? ????

I thought punting would be an issue after the crappy punting performance at the Blue White game. 888 ?????? On the contrary, Anthony Fera was pretty effective most of the year, both punting and kicking off. This was a pleasant surprise. It is a shame that he had the emergency appendectomy and subsequent complications, which ended his year prematurely.

The only two things I completely failed to predict were the Stanley/Redd Double Urinegate and the Jenn Sterger/Brett Favre fiasco. ??? ???? ????? ?? ???????? Who woulda known? Epic fail, man.

I called this a mediocre Penn State year, and I think you’ll all agree that that’s what it was. After the sad homecoming debacle of the Illinois game, it looked like all was lost and many didn’t believe that the Nittany Lions would win another game during the remainder of the year. However, hope was restored after the Michigan win. Then it looked bleak again after blowing the 14-3 lead to Ohio State. Just goes to show you that you’re never as bad as you seem to be when you lose, and you’re never as good as you think you are when you win. I believe that the boys did as well as could be expected this year and further, I think this team has a lot of potential to do good things next year, especially if McGloin remains the starting QB. So I’m going to congratulate them on giving us some good memories this year, even if they’re not the greatest Penn State team to ever tie on the cleats.

And to the seniors, thanks for the thrills you’ve given us through the years and good luck with your futures, in football and beyond!

I haven’t recapped the Michigan State game yet. I’ll do that in a subsequent post. It’s late and I don’t want to rush through it, being my last chance at biting commentary for the regular season. Speaking of Moo U., I predicted that they would win at least 10 games this season. They won 11. Hey? Huh? Give it up for the Turkey, who really doesn’t get to brag all that often.

Hope you all had a happy and safe Thanksgiving weekend!

Floundering Around in Mediocrity

Posted on October 5, 2010 Written by The Nittany Turkey

Bob Flounders of the good old Harrisburg Patriot-News wrote in today’s edition that Penn State is, at this point, a mediocre football program, as in fact it has been for several years.

Funny, this Turkey essentially wrote a similar piece back in November 2007. It was the end of the 2007 campaign and PSU had just lost to Moo U. The Nittany Lions wound up playing in the Valero Alamo Bowl that year. I think I fell asleep during the game. A mediocre bowl for a mediocre team having a mediocre year.

In that post I mentioned that aside from two anomalous years, 2002 and 2005, when some especially talented players were playing well, PSU hadn’t done much at all in the new millennium. Ironically, the following year they backed into the Rose Bowl, but they lost miserably to USC.

“It’s the five-year anniversary of the last time the Nittany Lions beat anyone worth a damn.”

Flounders asserts much the same. He leads in with the assertion that this weekend is the fifth anniversary of the last time Penn State beat anyone worthwhile. That was Ohio State, and no doubt you all remember that game. Some say it was the best game in recent history. Penn State 17, Ohio State 10 was the final score. (See my post back then, entitled “One for the Ages“).

The Buckeyes’ offense, a unit featuring future Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith and future first-round picks Nick Mangold and Ted Ginn Jr., could do little against Paterno’s defense. The sellout crowd made it difficult for the visitors to hear – and execute – and when they did, they went nowhere fast against Paul Posluszny, Tamba Hali and the guys.

PSU’s offense was efficient enough, riding touchdowns from true freshman Derrick Williams and team captain Michael Robinson.

That Paterno team had heart and featured great leadership. It played with intensity.

Most important, it was loaded with talent.

Remember what we had going for us back then? Quite a few of those guys found themselves playing on Sundays after leaving Penn State. Ah, the memories.

How many NFL caliber players can you count on the present team? Where is the senior leadership? What kind of a bowl do you think this team will play in with a 7-5 or (gulp!) 6-6 record? And more important, what will the future hold, given that recruiting has not been so great? Once again, Flounders and I are on the same channel:

Looking for reasons why the Lions may not win more than seven games this season? Those are the big ones. Lack of talent and experience. Tell me how many future NFL players you see on the starting offense and defense.

Maybe a half-dozen or so? That might be stretching it. You can make a case for wideouts Derek Moye and Justin Brown, offensive lineman Stefen Wisniewski and freshman QB Rob Bolden. On defense, there’s linebacker Mike Mauti and possibly true freshman linebacker Khairi Fortt and a defensive back or two.

That’s it. That 2005 Paterno team had Robinson at quarterback, Posluszny and Connor at linebacker, Hali and Jay Alford on the defensive line, Levi Brown at offensive tackle, Tony Hunt in the backfield, Deon Butler and Williams at wideout and Calvin Lowry at safety.

And don’t forget about Alan Zemaitis – a Tampa Bay draft pick – at corner and the true freshman from western Pennsylvania, Sean Lee, who came to the rescue in the Orange Bowl when “Poz” hurt his knee. That Lion team was so good its special teams ace – gunner Ethan Kilmer – went to Cincinnati in the seventh round.

It’s going to be a long time before the Nittany Lions put a team like that on the field again. Flounders thinks so, too. It might be darkest before dawn, but I think we’re around midnight right about now.

Paterno and his players haven’t been able to duplicate that effort since. It’s been too long. And don’t look for it anytime soon. The Lions will lose to Big Ten power Ohio State in November and figure to struggle with the likes of Michigan, Northwestern, Michigan State and Saturday’s opponent, Illinois, at home.

Flounders and I are seriously on the same wavelength. The only future opponent he doesn’t mention in that litany is Indiana, which essentially got a $3 million payoff to play in our backyard at FedEx Field instead of their home field on November 20. Still, if Michigan will be a potential struggle for PSU, consider that the Wolverines just barely—albeit spectacularly, in Denard Robinson fashion—beat Indiana last week; therefore, the Lions might have trouble with the Hoosiers, too.

I do expect them to win at least one of the five games against what some of you persist in calling inferior opponents. The problem is that they’re not inferior. I expect Illinois to be no picnic in the park, and I expect losses to Michigan and Moo U. Northwestern could be tough, too.

Let’s re-evaluate that “inferior opponent” thing. It might have been true in 1994, but it is not true now. Penn State is a middle of the pack Big Ten team at best now. Just wait until Nebraska comes along next year to provide another potential top echelon foe.

As Flounders says, I’m not suggesting that these former “inferior opponents” are better than Penn State. They’re pretty much on similar levels. Flounders used the word “ordinary”; I’ll stick with mediocre.

Big 10/12 Divisions for 2011

Posted on September 1, 2010 Written by The Nittany Turkey

The Big Ten Conference, now composed of twelve schools, has just announced how it will split the conference. The new divisions are not yet named, so I’ll call them Division A and Division B.

Division A: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, and Wisconsin

Division B: Iowa, Michigan, Moo U., Minnesota, Nebraska, and Northwestern

The Big Ten says that there will be a crossover regular season game that will not change from year to year. We can hope that that would be PSU-Nebraska, but in this Turkey’s mind it likely means that the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry will continue.

If either are the case, what will happen to the Land Grant Trophy, the booby prize that goes to the winner of the Penn State vs. Moo U. rivalry every year? Will the Big Ten schedule an inter-divisional game between the two land grant institutions every two years, or what? You can see that this important thing is foremost in the Turkey’s mind.

Full story, including the just released PSU schedule for 2011, here.

Whodat Turkey?

The Nittany Turkey is a retired techno-geek who thinks he knows something about Penn State football and everything else in the world. If there's a topic, we have an opinion on it, and you know what "they" say about opinions! Most of what is posted here involves a heavy dose of hip-shooting conjecture, but unlike some other blogs, we don't represent it as fact. Read More…
