The Nittany Turkey

Primarily about Penn State football, this is a tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Big 10/12 Divisions for 2011

Posted on September 1, 2010 Written by The Nittany Turkey

The Big Ten Conference, now composed of twelve schools, has just announced how it will split the conference. The new divisions are not yet named, so I’ll call them Division A and Division B.

Division A: Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, and Wisconsin

Division B: Iowa, Michigan, Moo U., Minnesota, Nebraska, and Northwestern

The Big Ten says that there will be a crossover regular season game that will not change from year to year. We can hope that that would be PSU-Nebraska, but in this Turkey’s mind it likely means that the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry will continue.

If either are the case, what will happen to the Land Grant Trophy, the booby prize that goes to the winner of the Penn State vs. Moo U. rivalry every year? Will the Big Ten schedule an inter-divisional game between the two land grant institutions every two years, or what? You can see that this important thing is foremost in the Turkey’s mind.

Full story, including the just released PSU schedule for 2011, here.

Alex Matteas is the freshman from my city. He played for the Ottawa Sooners. I will watch to see how he does at Penn State although first year students usually warm the bench up here and may get some action in second year and are always on the five or six year plan to complete their degree. If they do not keep their academics up they are not eligable to play. I think Alex turned down a few offers north and south of the 49th from various colleges. Big fat scholarships in the U.S. help with the decision making most often.

Alex Mateas is listed as a 6’3″/310 lb freshman who can play either offensive tackle or interior line positions. The Nittany Lions are rebuilding their offensive line after losing some good guys to the NFL, so he’s got a good shot if he can prove himself worthy. Chances are that he won’t play this year unless there are some serious injuries. He’s not on the three-deep depth chart and might be red-shirted. That way, he can work on strength during the season and come back bigger and stronger next year.

Keep me posted on Alex as you have your nose to the ground re: the Turkeys or whatever they are called. We get some news in our paper but not a lot. My old uni team is called the University of Ottawa Gee Gee’s which stand for the colours of the school (garnet and gray). They are touted to do well this year. The last year my daughter was at uni in Waterloo, her school team won the Vanier Cup which is the best University team in Canada. It was quite a thrill for her and of course many others.

Whatever! No doubt some of the Lions are turkeys too! Now I recall the pix on your summer trip of the lion. Looks like one of the ones we have poised outside the Bank of Canada.

As a Lion, only I will admit to being a turkey.

Whodat Turkey?

The Nittany Turkey is a retired techno-geek who thinks he knows something about Penn State football and everything else in the world. If there's a topic, we have an opinion on it, and you know what "they" say about opinions! Most of what is posted here involves a heavy dose of hip-shooting conjecture, but unlike some other blogs, we don't represent it as fact. Read More…
