The Nittany Turkey

Primarily about Penn State football, this is a tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Whither Pat Devlin

Posted on January 4, 2010 Written by The Nittany Turkey

Although highly touted quarterback Pat Devlin is long gone from Penn State, many of you have speculated about whether he or Daryll Clark was the better quarterback. While that might be moot at this point (based on which one led an FBS team to an 11-2 record), it is still worth a peek at Devlin’s performance as a University of Delaware Blue Hen.

UDel finished the 2009 season with a 6-5 record, but they and Devlin kicked off the year with a bang-up 35-0 win over West Chester, in which Devlin completed 80 percent of his passes, while throwing for two touchdowns and no interceptions. However, at the end of the season, things did not look so good. Delaware lost three of four games, and Devlin’s QB rating dropped to double digits. In his final outing of the year, a 30-12 loss to Villanova, Pat completed 42 of 58 passes for 407 yards and a touchdown, but he was intercepted three times.

Here are statistics for Clark and Devlin, side-by-side:

Clark Devlin
Games played 13 11
QB Rating 95.7 99.7
Completions 232 220
Attempts 381 344
Percentage Complete 60.9 64.0
Yards Passing 3003 2664
Yards per Attempt 7.9 7.7
Yards per Game 231 242.2
Touchdowns Passing 24 16
Interceptions 10 9
Rushes 84 84
Yards Rushing 211 127
Yards per Game 16.2 11.5
Average Yards per Carry 2.5 1.5
Rushing Touchdowns 7 4
Sacks 15 26

So, we see similar stats, with some exceptions colored green or red. Delaware no doubt had a worse offensive line than PSU, as evidenced by Devlin’s 26 sacks as opposed to 15 for Clark. This may also mean the Devlin is not as slippery in the pocket.

There are a lot of things going on behind the stats that affect them, including Joe Paterno’s penchant for going tight-ass in big games.

What do you think? It is difficult to predict how well Devlin might have performed as a Nittany Lion, in spite of stats. Can the arguments and the hypotheses be laid to rest at this point?

The Victors

Posted on October 26, 2009 Written by The Nittany Turkey

For the first time in 13 years, the #13 Nittany Lions (7-1, 3-1 Big Ten) took care of business in da Big House, annihilating the perennial nemesis Michigan Wolverines (5-3, 1-3 Big Ten) 35-10.

Daryll Clark had the kind of day we all knew he could have, throwing four touchdown passes while going 16-27 for 230 yards. Three of the four touchdown passes went to Graham Zug, who also had a breakout day. Meanwhile, the ground game was clicking, although Stephfon Green did not make the trip due to “an ankle.” Evan Royster powered the ball forward 20 times for 100 yards.

For his effort in leading Penn State to the big win, Daryll Clark was awarded Big Ten Player of the Week honors. Aside from his individual performance on the field, Clark’s leadership was a key factor in this game.

Say what you will about Michigan and its 1-3 Big Ten record, but winning in Michigan Stadium has been a rare event in the annals of Nittany Lions history. Make no mistake: this win was big spiritually. It provided renewed hope for a big New Year’s Day payday. It was a helluva confidence builder. ????? ????

Illiniwekless Illini Unable to Tomahawk Nittany Lions

Big Chief Illiniwek
Big Chief Illiniwek

Take that, NCAA! I’m preserving the mascot you banned in 2005, because when you yanked the plug on the big chief, college football lost part of its soul. This Turkey is here to protect the aforementioned soul of college football from the politically correct wanker yankers of the NCAA.

The Fighting Illini (who are still allowed to be fighters, yet cannot have their warrior leader) could have used some more horses and some tomahawks on Saturday. Illinois (1-3, 0-2 Big Ten) had been highly regarded before their season started with a loss to Missouri, but things have gone downhill for them ever since. On Saturday, while playing in front of nearly 63,000 orange-clad fans on their newly remodeled home field, they lost once again, this time to our beloved #15 Nittany Lions (4-1, 1-1 Big Ten), 35-17.

PSU finally had a game that highlighted the rushing offense while making the heretofore incompetent offensive line look competent. Each of the three running backs, Evan Royster, Stephfon Green, and Brent Carter scored a touchdown; Royster and Green each had over 100 yards. The long run of the day was 52 yards, by Green. The two quarterbacks got into the mix, too, with Daryll Clark running 7 times for 83 yards and two touchdowns, with a long run of 51 yards, while Kevin Newsome ran only once, for 16 yards. Overall, the Nittany Lions ate up 338 yards and scored all five touchdowns on the ground, impressively averaging 8.5 yards per carry. Well done, runners and sleeping giants of the o-line! Moreover, kudos to the much-maligned coaches, who apparently spotted something in the Illinois-OSU tape that led them to believe that they could tear up the middle of Illinois zone scheme.

Whodat Turkey?

The Nittany Turkey is a retired techno-geek who thinks he knows something about Penn State football and everything else in the world. If there's a topic, we have an opinion on it, and you know what "they" say about opinions! Most of what is posted here involves a heavy dose of hip-shooting conjecture, but unlike some other blogs, we don't represent it as fact. Read More…
