The Nittany Turkey

Primarily about Penn State football, this is a tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Judge: Sandusky Trial Starts June 5

Posted on June 4, 2012 Written by The Nittany Turkey

Having been pestered by a plethora of defense motions, Centre County Judge John Cleland was unyielding about changing Jerry Sandusky’s trial date. The show will go on, and it starts tomorrow, June 5, with jury selection. The actual trial will begin approximately June 11, depending on how long it takes to find a jury.

Sandusky is looking at 52 felony and misdemeanor counts for molesting and raping young boys.

Jury selection might be difficult because of Sandusky’s notoriety with respect to the charges, and his previous popularity in Pennsylvania, Centre County in particular.  This Turkey notes that in this year’s most hated Americans list, Casey Anthony was Number One and Sandusky was Number Three. So, obviously the anti-Sandusky bias extends far beyond the county line. You can expect lots of challenges from Joe Amendola, Sandusky’s attorney. Eventually, a jury will be seated. Hopefully, it won’t be like OJ’s.

There will be no television coverage, which will be weird for those of us here in Florida who are trial junkies. We all got into the Casey Anthony trial whole hog. The judge also imposed a ban on Twitter from the courtroom.

Senior Deputy Attorney General Joseph McGettigan will be the lead prosecutor for the Commonwealth. His team has lined up eight witnesses who are expected to testify in detail about their molestation by  Sandusky. They range from 18 to 28 years old now. Other witnesses will include Tim Curley and Gary Schultz, who both are under indictment for perjury with respect to their testimony before the Grand Jury that indicted Sandusky. The pending charges should probably silence them, using the Fifth Amendment to avoid self-incrimination.

Amendola is a skilled defense attorney, who can be expected to go for the throat with respect to each of the eight primary prosecution witnesses and, hence, their credibility.

These eight witnesses had petitioned the court to be referred to by pseudonyms (e.g., Victim Two) during the trial. Judge Cleland denied that request, so the victims’ names will be revealed to the media and public attending the trial. There was no objection by the defense, but the motions were filed by the victims’ personal attorneys, not the defense or the prosecution. The judge said that state law didn’t give him the authority to allow adults to protect their identities in open court.

Sandusky, if convicted, will most likely spend the rest of his life in prison.

Pennlive.com has put together a beautiful interactive breakdown of the charges against Sandusky and the likely defense Amendola will mount against them.

Rapid Shots

Posted on January 19, 2012 Written by The Nittany Turkey

I continue to search in vain for a phrase that will improve upon “quick hits” for its inscrutability and allusion to drinking contest or quickie sexual affairs. This week, we’ll do Rapid Shots. Tequila?

Here, then, without further ado, are some Penn State football news items that are worthy of your perusal.

Wow, the New York Times did a whole story on how the Board of Trustees made the Joe Paterno firing decision! Read it and answer some of the nagging questions that were bouncing around your brain.

**********

The Board of Trustees will meet Friday amid growing criticism of their rush to judgment about Paterno. (Does anyone care about Spanier anymore? Ever?) The York Daily Record has the story. Among issues that are scheduled to be decided is whether Steve Garban will continue as chairman. This one could be loud and long!

**********

Do you know who all the members of the Board of Trustees are? The Centre Daily Times has a quick-hit list of them and their affiliations.

**********

As you undoubtedly know by now, a gaggle of pissed off alumni  are running for the BOT, among them former PSU player and current New Jersey freeholder Adam Taliaferro. By way of the Post Gazette, the Morning Call has the scoop.

**********

Former Penn State and Steelers Hall of Famer Franco Harris is one of the big instigators behind the alumni insurrection, as reported by the Morning Call.

**********

Franco will be holding another of his feedback meetings, called “Real Talk”, immediately following the BOT meeting on Friday, says the Daily Collegian.

**********

Damage control emails between president Rod Erickson and the BOT reveal how sensitive PSU is to potential compromising of funding sources. The Patriot-News reports on this.

**********

John Butler, a Philly guy, is the new defensive secondary coach under head coach Bill O’Brien. Bob Flounders of the Patriot-News blogs on Butler’s affinity for good Penn State defense.

**********

A Nittany Lions fan from Connecticut is concerned that Bill O’Brien might countermand the Penn State tradition of not running up the score on opponents in a letter to the Centre Daily Times.

**********

The Nittany Lions will be running out of the tunnel to a different tune next year. The Penn State Blue Band has decided to dump “Rock and Roll” because its British writer, Gary Glitter, is a convicted child sex offender. The Daily Collegian reports on this bit of political correctness. We have entered a new era of oversensitivity! ??? ???? ?? ????????

**********

Well, that’s it for this week’s Rapid Shots. What it will be next week or even if there will be one next week, this Turkey does not know at the moment. ??? ???? One thing I do know is that all eyes and ears will be on what promises to be a tempestuous Board of Trustees meeting on Friday.

Joe Tells His Side

Posted on January 15, 2012 Written by The Nittany Turkey

Former Penn State Nittany Lions head football coach Joe Paterno tells his story about the Sandusky scandal in the first interview granted since he was fired on November 9. The Washington Post exclusive can be found here. It’s good Sunday reading.

Whodat Turkey?

The Nittany Turkey is a retired techno-geek who thinks he knows something about Penn State football and everything else in the world. If there's a topic, we have an opinion on it, and you know what "they" say about opinions! Most of what is posted here involves a heavy dose of hip-shooting conjecture, but unlike some other blogs, we don't represent it as fact. Read More…
