Ohio State BuckeyesThe Ohio State game always seems to be the high point of the season, regardless of how the combatants are doing at the time. This year, the unranked Penn State Nittany Lions (5-1, 2-0 Big Ten) travel to Ohio Stadium to take on the #1 Ohio State Buckeyes (6-0, 2-0) in a “blacked-out” Horseshoe.

The so-called Black-Out is an opposite take on Penn State’s famous White Outs. Wise guys! The Buckeyes will be debuting all new black uniforms for the occasion.   [Read more…]

A Most Decisive Upset in 1964

Fifty-one years ago, I was a student at Penn State, a sophomore babe in the woods enjoying his first of many autumns of Nittany Lions football. The Ohio State upset of that year in Columbus remains an indelible memory for anyone possessing any cognitive ability at the time. Here are my enhanced recollections, which I like to re-publish during Ohio State weeks in the years when the Lions play at the Horseshoe in Columbus.

It wasn’t pretty, by any means. It was sloppy — and brutal. Brutus brutalized the hapless Ducks to the tune of 42-20 even while turning the ball over four times. Thus, it could have been a lot more brutal. Nevertheless, it was a satisfying display of power football, even for a turkey who thought Oregon would win in a shootout. [Read more…]
