That Dullard Look

You’ve got to wonder about this Nittany Lions team. Resting on the laurels of an initial blowout exacted upon a FCS mid-grade opponent, they came out with what Urban Meyer used to refer to as “that dullard look” and played a shitty first half. With a 10-7 deficit fueling the locker room, they must have made some adjustments, coming back to cover the spread, which had reached 30.5 in some books.

You’ll have Sanguinarians saying “a win is a win” and suchlike. They’re the same ones who were using phrases like “offensive juggernaut” after the Idaho massacre.

Sean Clifford was 16-22 for 279 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Jahan Dotson and Pat Freiermuth lived up to their star receiver status, scoring two touchdowns each.

However, the running game was largely absent. Our leading rusher was Clifford, with 11 carries for 51 yards, followed by Journey Brown with 6 for 28. The Lions ended up with a paltry 78 net yards rushing. The Bulls pretty much loaded the box all night, and it worked. It just took the Brain Trust a little too long to figure out the need to throw the ball. Well, a LOT too long.

That’s a Lot of Bull

(So don’t get Buffaloed!)

We’re into full cupcake mode in Week Two of the fledgling NCAA football season — at least for the Penn State Nittany Lions (1-0, 0-0 B10), who are coming off a 79-7 dismantling of mega-cupcake Idaho. This week, PSU hosts the mighty Buffalo Bulls (1-0, 0-0 MAC), who fared well against the vaunted FCS Robert Morris Colonials, trouncing them 38-10.

I would include the Kitties’ mythical ranking in the above paragraph, but we won’t see the AP poll until tomorrow because the #9 Leprechauns must play Lousyville in primetime tonight. But tomorrow, I’ll be busy on Dorian watch, so I thought I might as well write this today.

While I might understand the Irish vs. the Cardinals being a primetime game, I sure as hell cannot figure out why the scheduling powers wanted Buffalo and Penn State to play under the lights at Beaver Stadium. Yea, verily, we’re looking at another lopsided cupcake eating contest, which might well be played before a significantly smaller crowd than that of the opening game.

I Watched It Sober

Penn State Nittany Lions 79, Idaho Vandals 7

Well, it was better than watching continuing hurricane projections that keep us on edge. I stayed awake through most of the game, but I can draw almost no conclusions from what I saw. Oh, yeah, maybe one: the first game of the year can almost fill Beaver Stadium even though it’s a foregone conclusion what all those fans are going to see. That’s encouraging spirit! And as expected, Penn State got the “W”, which inspired the huge, ugly drop-cap to the left. (Plus, I like to play with blog formatting when I’m bored and don’t have much to write about).
