The Nittany Turkey

Primarily about Penn State football, this is a tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Joe Doesn’t Like JoePa

Posted on January 2, 2006 Written by The Nittany Turkey

Dan Patrick, in his ESPN radio show today, revealed that his older brother had a conversation with Joe Paterno in the lobby of the team’s hotel in Miami Beach during which Paterno had said that the one thing he regrets is not speaking up when people started calling him ‘JoePa. ??? ???? ????? ’ He said that he doesn’t like the nickname and he regrets that it has stuck. ???? ?????

OK, so The Turkey will not be using the nickname henceforth. ???? ???????

Foot in Mouth Disease

Posted on January 2, 2006 Written by The Nittany Turkey

WVU is making short work of refuting point #10 in my previous post, which alludes to their unworthiness as BCS competitors. Watching the Nokia Sugar Bowl with foot firmly in beak, this Turkey hereby apologizes to the entire State of West Virginia, whose Mountaineers have surged to a 21–0 first quarter lead over the discombobulated Georgia Bulldogs. Georgia can certainly recover their composure and win this game but no matter which way it goes The Turkey was wrong to marginalize the Mountaineers. ????? ??? ??????

Ya gotta love the unpredictability of the NCAA Division I-A post-season! ????? ?? ??????

Georgia fans probably had been grousing along the same lines as were some Nittany Lions fans I know—that the Mountaineers (or in the case of the Lion fans, the Florida State Seminoles) were unworthy opposition. ???? ??? ???? ??????? Thus, let this be a lesson: Beware the overconfidence that perceived superiority brings, and beware a scrappy, supposedly overmatched opponent with something to prove!

Ten Bowl Observations

Posted on January 2, 2006 Written by The Nittany Turkey

  1. Has there ever been worse officiating in a New Year’s Day (+1) bowl game than in today’s Outback Bowl? That call on the onside kick was ridiculous, capping off the crappy calls all day long by an inept Conference USA crew. Iowa recovered the kick and replays show that they were not offside, yet it was called back.
  2. Why are the cheerleaders for southern schools and California schools so much better looking than the girls at northern schools? (But ours have such great personalities…)
  3. What has happened to the Big Ten in minor bowls this year? Are our second tier teams really that bad? (I don’t count Wisconsin because they were playing inspired for Barry’s swan song while Auburn forgot to show up.)
  4. It is my hope that the top tier Big Ten teams in BCS bowls—namely Penn State and Ohio State—will do much better. In other words, I am hoping that the poor performance by Michigan, Iowa, Northwestern, and Minnesota is not an indication that the Big Ten generally sucks this year.
  5. I would like nothing more than seeing Notre Dame’s overachieving asses kicked in the Fiesta Bowl. I predict that the Luck o’ the Irish will run out and green blood will be spilled on the Arizona sand.
  6. Was that not the ugliest field goal in the history of organized football with which ‘Bama won the Cotton Bowl?
  7. What a great week for football this will turn out to be! Miami getting their asses kicked in the Peach Bowl on Friday, then two days of excellent NFL games, and then six great bowl games today followed by the Orange and Rose bowls on Tuesday and Wednesday…it don’t git no better’n this!
  8. I am worried about the Orange Bowl, especially now that the spread favors Penn State by 10, reflecting A.J. Nicholson’s suspension from the FSU team. There was plenty to worry about before and there’s still a lot to worry about now. I just hope that being false 10 point favorites doesn’t give our guys a false sense of superiority while further motivating FSU, who rarely have any trouble getting up for big games. The Nittany Lions will have to play their asses off to beat the ‘Noles, particularly in this heat. (A high of 82 is forecast for Tuesday.)
  9. Could Brent Mussberger be secretly having an affair with A.J. Hawk? If so, could Brady Quinn be jealous?
  10. If West Virginia is embarrassed by Georgia tonight, it is time that the BCS re-think the notion of including the Big Least champ as a wired-in selection? We shouldn’t have to tolerate both the sell out to Notre Dame and inferior, second rate competition from the Big East.

Whodat Turkey?

The Nittany Turkey is a retired techno-geek who thinks he knows something about Penn State football and everything else in the world. If there's a topic, we have an opinion on it, and you know what "they" say about opinions! Most of what is posted here involves a heavy dose of hip-shooting conjecture, but unlike some other blogs, we don't represent it as fact. Read More…
