The Nittany Turkey

Primarily about Penn State football, this is a tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

High Drama: O’Brien Staying

Posted on January 4, 2013 Written by The Nittany Turkey

In the wake of a brief scare caused by news of Penn State head football coach Bill O’Brien interviewing with the NFL Cleveland Browns, the Maxwell Coach of the Year says he’s not going to bolt. Leaving Happy Valley for the Dog Pound would be a big mistake, no matter how much money was involved.

Other NFL organizations expressed interest in O’Brien’s services, namely the Philadelphia Eagles, the Arizona Cardinals, and the San Diego Chargers, all of whom fired their head coaches this year. ??? ????

Why would O’Brien want to hang up the cleats after one turbid year at Penn State? Answer: he wouldn’t. He’s not that kind of guy. In his words:

“I’m not a one-and-done guy. I made a commitment to these players at Penn State and that’s what I am going to do. ???? 21 I’m not gonna cut and run after one year. ???? ?????? ???? ?????? That’s for sure.”

After two, all bets are off. For now, though, he’s committed and we can lay the rumors to rest.

O’Brien interviewed with Cleveland Browns

Posted on January 3, 2013 Written by The Nittany Turkey

The Cleveland Plain Dealer’s Mary Kay Cabot reports that the NFL Cleveland Browns have interviewed Penn State head football coach Bill O’Brien for their head coaching vacancy. They’ve also interviewed O’Brien’s buddy, Doug Marrone of Syracuse, and they plan to interview Oregon head coach Chip Kelly tomorrow. (He’s working late tonight.)

We hope that O’Brien has better sense than to leave Happy Valley for the Dog Pound.

All three of the coaches mentioned are also expected to be interviewed by the Buffalo Bills and the Philadelphia Eagles, who fired their head coaches after the NFL season ended.

Read about it.

Mandel: Suit will push O’Brien out door

Posted on January 3, 2013 Written by The Nittany Turkey

Mandel: O'Brien will leave because of suit

Caught the following thread on Twitter. Sports Illustrated’s ever popular college football reporter Stewart Mandel opines that Corbett’s “frivolous” lawsuit will impel Bill O’Brien to head for the NFL because he’ll tire of the Sandusky thing being at the fore.

I have a few things to say. First of all, the idea of the suit is to restore Penn State to a competitive position, so why should that upset O’Brien? Secondly, the hoopla over this suit is likely to wane long before next football season, fading into the constant level of vestigial background noise associated with the Sandusky scandal.  Antitrust suits drag on for years and years, and we don’t even know whether the District Court will even hear this case. Finally, Mandel is full of shit.

Here’s the stream, as of about 5 PM today.

Whodat Turkey?

The Nittany Turkey is a retired techno-geek who thinks he knows something about Penn State football and everything else in the world. If there's a topic, we have an opinion on it, and you know what "they" say about opinions! Most of what is posted here involves a heavy dose of hip-shooting conjecture, but unlike some other blogs, we don't represent it as fact. Read More…
