Sending Ben a Message?

Posted on April 12, 2010 Written by The Nittany Turkey

The Pittsburgh Steelers shocked the sports world by trading Super Bowl XLIII MVP wide receiver Santonio Holmes to the New York Jets for a lowly fifth round draft pick, a 155th overall with no additional compensation. Wow! Jeez! WTF??

Holmes had gotten deeply into the doghouse through his off-field behavior of late when he was accused of throwing a cocktail at a woman in an Orlando night club and cutting her. This wasn’t his first off-field incident involving police intervention.

Both Holmes and Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger brought shame upon the staid Steelers during the off-season with their high-profile antics. Trading a starting quarterback would have been cataclysmic; the Steelers would have had to rebuild their offense from the ground up. Therefore, they chose the next best thing, a seemingly untouchable team hero with a year left on his contract. Think Ben will get the message?

Meanwhile, the authorities in Georgia decided not to charge Roethlisberger with assault on the young woman with whom he allegedly had a scene in a night club bathroom. Will Big Ben realize how fortunate he is to have dodged this bullet?

I don’t know. Roethlisberger does not seem to have his head on straight. You would have thought that the motorcycle accident while not wearing a helmet might have knocked some sense into him. He swore he would never do that again — for the team’s sake — but since then, he has found another field of nefarious endeavour — babes. He still has the Tahoe case hanging over him. He needs to learn to conduct his off-field affairs with some class.

I feel that the Steelers organization will probably dump Roethlisberger if he commits one more off-field indiscretion. Trading Holmes had better convince Ben that they’re serious about team discipline.

The league is serious about this off-field crap, too. Rumor has it that Holmes will be suspended for four games for violation of the NFL’s substance abuse policy. The Steelers probably had a heads-up on that before they pulled the trigger on this astounding trade.

Vote for Nittany Lions as NFL’s All-Time Best Draft Picks

Posted on April 7, 2010 Written by The Nittany Turkey

The NFL is holding an open vote for its all-time 75 best draft picks. Among the candidates for inclusion are former Nittany Lions Kerry Collins, Jack Ham, Franco Harris, Lenny Moore, and Mike Munchak.

The voting mechanism is interesting. It is not the typical “choose m candidates out of n total choices” kind of thing. Instead, you view pairs of players and vote for one of the two. For example, you might see Fran Tarkenton vs. Mike Curtis pop up on your screen. Under each of their photos is a summary of their stats and whether they are active or not. After thirty votes, your current top ten will appear, and it will be updated each time you vote. I made about 100 selections, and although I never saw Franco or Munchak come up, I found the whole thing very entertaining.

Further details and biographic sketches of the four Lions are available at the main PSU Athletics web site.

Steelers Express Interest in Morelli

Posted on April 1, 2010 Written by The Nittany Turkey

As you know, we here at The Nittany Turkey track the trials and tribulations of former Nittany Lion quarterback Anthony Morelli. We frequently ridiculed his efforts to secure an NFL job, but it appears now that he might have the last laugh.

When we last touched on the subject, Morelli, a Rhodes scholar who has always gone by Anthony and never Tony, had given up a potentially lucrative career in the reconstituted Arena Football League, where he could have earned as much as $75,000 per season, in favor of concentrating on getting into the NFL. Tony had been working with former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Jumping Jack Flash Trudeau, and while in Indy, he attended the NFL Scouting Combine. He did not participate in the drills with this year’s crop of college players, but he was nevertheless accorded an audience with scouts on Friday, after everyone else had gone home. Later, in March, Morelli participated in Penn State Pro Day, on his old campus.

The NFL had shunned Morelli, who was initially signed by the Arizona Cardinals, where he played in the pre-season back in 2008, but was released before the start of the regular season. Since then, he has failed to catch on with the few NFL teams that gave him tryouts.

Now, it appears that he has a real shot with his hometown Pittsburgh Steelers. According to Ron Musselman of the Post-Gazette, the Steelers liked what they saw at the combine and Penn State Pro Day. “Morelli has a real shot at being the next Brian St. Pierre,” said Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin, “especially given the uncertainty surrounding Ben.” Tomlin was referring to starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who apparently has an IQ lower than even Morelli’s, especially when it comes to being twice shy after being burnt once, but I digress.

The Steelers signed Roethlisberger’s backup, Charlie Batch, originally from the Pittsburgh community of Homestead, to a two-year extension on March 26. Byron Leftwich had a one-year deal last year which expired, leaving open a slot for a third-stringer.

Morelli has Pittsburgh roots. He seems a natural for the third-string slot. Anticipating being offered a contract, Morelli has contacted former Steeler great Mark Malone in Chicago, with the intent being to engage another mentor who is “close to the Rooneys.”

Steelers Offensive Coordinator Bruce Arians, when contacted by ESPN, denied that Morelli already had an offer. “It’s not something I can discuss,” stated Arians, who appeared to be uncomfortable with the subject. “We’ve seen Morelli and we know what he can do. Did you see how he winged a pass 60 yards at Three Rivers Stadium when he was only 10 years old? Anyhow, a lot depends on what goes on at the top.” Arians was referring to the Roethlisberger situation, in which the top quarterback has gotten himself in deep shit because he apparently does not know how to keep his dick in his pants.

Pittsburgh is a great town for quarterbacks. This Turkey can personally recall four hall-of-famers who played for the Steelers. Aside from the obvious one, Terry Bradshaw, you might not recall that John Unitas, Len Dawson, and Bobby Layne all played for the Steelers at various stages in their careers. However, Morelli’s bust is not anticipated to join theirs in Canton. He’s been enough of a bust on the field, already.

Morelli’s entourage in Indianapolis did not answer phone calls. However, it was rumored that Mrs. Morelli was vacationing in Hawaii with Mrs. Bubby Brister.

Will this rumor come to fruition? We here at The Turkey promise to stay close to this story.

Whodat Turkey?

The Nittany Turkey is a retired techno-geek who thinks he knows something about Penn State football and everything else in the world. If there's a topic, we have an opinion on it, and you know what "they" say about opinions! Most of what is posted here involves a heavy dose of hip-shooting conjecture, but unlike some other blogs, we don't represent it as fact. Read More…
