The Nittany Turkey

Primarily about Penn State football, this is a tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

McGloin Moves Up

Posted on October 3, 2013 Written by The Nittany Turkey

The Oakland Raiders have cleared Terrelle Pryor to start this week at QB after he had experienced concussion symptoms. His backup will be undrafted but ready former Nittany Lion Matt McGloin.

McGloin, formerly third string, moves up into the vacuum created by Matt Flynn’s free-fall from last week’s starter to digging pine splinters out of his ass and carrying a clipboard.

We live in a world of Kevin Bacon coincidences. Matt Flynn came from LSU. McGloin is bumping him out of the way. At Penn State, McGloin bumped Rob Bolden out of his way — all the way to LSU. What goes around, comes— Aw, shit, I got lost in my own logic.

Flynn didn’t impress anyone very positively in his start last week, getting sacked seven times and fumbling a couple. Sort of like a Roethlisberger performance of late, if you ask me.

Read about it here.

Many thanks to Drozz for apprising me of this move.

Astorino Tells All

Posted on September 5, 2013 Written by The Nittany Turkey

Funny thing — while I was writing the previous post about the Brick Dick game, I was looking at stats from the 2011 encounter with the Emus when Drew Astorino’s name popped up. He was one of the team captains, but I remembered his off-field incidents, too. So, this morning, out of the blue, Sanguinarian and fellow Scorpio Joe sent me a BSD story about guess who? Yeah, that same Drew Astorino — gone but not forgotten — extensively quoted about some controversial team dynamics a couple of years ago.

The primary bad boy in the “tell-all” interview by Nikki Bowser: Jay Paterno.

The primary incident: Astorino yelling at Jay through the headset, “Get that motherfucker out of this game right now!”

The MF in question: Rob Bolden.

Bolden had been a special project of Joe and Jay, starting as a freshman and being bolstered at every step of the way in his battle for the starting position with Matt McGloin, now an NFL backup. The team felt it could win with McGloin and they were continually pissed off by the coaching decision to start Bolden. This incident was the culmination of that erupting frustration.

It almost provoked a physical fight, according to Astorino.

Read the story in Black Shoes Diary.

Someday, Justin Timberlake Will Play His Role

Posted on March 12, 2013 Written by The Nittany Turkey

Matt McGloin is a tough kid from a tough town (Scranton, home of the Pennsylvania division of Dunder-Mifflin Paper Company), and he’s up against some tough obstacles that lie between him and a professional football career. He is also a writer who knows how to express an opinion — strongly.

“My entire life has been defined by the words ‘you’ll never make it’. So hard work isn’t new to me. Some people play football with a ‘chip on their shoulder’ — I live life that way because I have to.”

With respect to the NFL, McGloin wasn’t invited to the Combine. Nevertheless, he is hopeful that he will be drafted. He is realistic about his size, but he shrugs off the suggestion that it’s not worth his while to go for it.

Read his impassioned editorial entitled “Yes, I live (and play) with a chip on my shoulder.” in SB Nation.

Whodat Turkey?

The Nittany Turkey is a retired techno-geek who thinks he knows something about Penn State football and everything else in the world. If there's a topic, we have an opinion on it, and you know what "they" say about opinions! Most of what is posted here involves a heavy dose of hip-shooting conjecture, but unlike some other blogs, we don't represent it as fact. Read More…
