Jesse Was Mourning Loss of a Friend

Posted on August 13, 2015 Written by The Nittany Turkey

My prior post about Jesse James deserves a somewhat mitigating postscript because of an issue of which I was unaware after his horrendous performance in the Hall of Fame game (two crucial pass drops).

Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote that Jesse was mourning the loss of a high school friend who had died unexpectedly two days before the game. James did not use it as an excuse, though, and the Steelers are still putting lots of faith in his future.

Young guys freeze up sometimes,” Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin said. “I mentioned to some of them, I would’ve liked to have shown them cutups of Lawrence Timmons from the Hall of Fame Game in 2007. It was pretty ugly. It provides a little window, a ray of light if you will, for those who are mentally weak enough to need it. You’ve got to start somewhere. Some starts are better than others. Regardless of how you start, it isn’t going to define you.”

NFL cut-down claims some Lions, but others survive.

Posted on September 2, 2014 Written by The Nittany Turkey

The NFL requires teams to cut their roster to 53 men and/or women in preparation for the start of the regular season. Cut-down day was Saturday, and some notable ex-Lions got good news and bad news.

Comings and Goings

The Oakland Raiders gave some good news to Matt McGloin, who remains the third-string QB behind rookie Derek Carr and veteran Matt Shaub, but at the same time gave the heave-ho to Englishman Jack Crawford.

The Washington Bearded Clams (we’re not allowed to say their REAL offensive name) dumped Evan Royster but retained turncoat Silas Redd, who’ll be a third-stringer behind Alfred Morris and Roy Helu.

Speaking of turncoats, the Pittsburgh Stillers kept ex-Lion and ex-Sooner Justin Brown, while shuffling Derek Moye to the practice squad.

And there is great news for all-academic math wiz John Urschel. He’s officially a Baltimore Raven. Don’t you love it when great guys like Urschel make it big? At the same time he got the good news, alas, ex-Nittany Lion A. Q. Shipley got the bad news from the Ravens, but he was later signed by the Indianapolis Colts.

Also set adrift by their respective NFL teams were Mike Farrell, Adam Gress, Nate Stupar (claimed by the Falcoons), Mickey Shuler, Jr. (claimed by the Jags), Devon Still, and Mike Zordich.

These Guys Ain’t Goin’ Nowheres

Navorro Bowman, ILB, San Francisco 49ers. Unfortunately, Bowman is on the PUP list with a torn ACL, so he won’t be playing at least the first six games.

Good ol’ reliable Robbie Gould, K, Chicago Bears. He’s entering his 11th NFL season and he remains one of the best kickers in the league.

Tamba Hali, OLB, Kansas City Chiefs. Kinda shaky with a knee injury as he enters his 10th year in the NFL.

Sean Lee, MLB, Dallas Cowboys. Injured reserve. Will not play this season due to a torn ACL suffered in June.

Mike Mauti, ILB, Minnesota Vikings.

Jared Odrick, DT, Miami Dolphins.

Rich Ohrnberger, G, San Diego Chargers. He was signed to a one-year contract for this, his seventh year.

Paul Poszlusznzy, MLB, Jacksonville Jagwires.

Andrew Quarless, TE, Green Bay Packers. “God’s Gift” returns for a sixth year in the NFL.

Allen Robinson, WR, Jacksonville Jaggoffs. The local press thinks he’s one bright, shining hope for new life at Jax once Bortles is extablished at quarterback.

Cameron Wake, DE, Miami Dolphins. Subject of trade rumors but rumors quashed.

Gimme da Damn Ball — but don’t make me run

Posted on February 24, 2014 Written by The Nittany Turkey

Allen Robinson
Allen Robinson remains focused on the sideline while Christian Hackenberg tells him some shit.

The knock on former Penn State wideout Allen Robinson has involved two areas: speed and hands. The NFL scouting report on him stated that he didn’t have separation speed and he catches the ball against his body instead of with his hands. His performance at the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine this weekend validated some of  the NFL scouts’ concerns.

The NFL Scouting Combine doesn’t test catching ability, but they certainly test speed in a number of ways. The most bandied about stat is the 40 yard dash, something we all can relate to. Robinson flat-0ut sucked in that drill, running a 4.60. Hell, some defensive linemen can run 4.60; they make excellent edge rushers. (The great Jadeveon Clowney of South Carolina ran a 4.47; Jackson Jeffcoat of Texas ran a 4.60; and Chris Smith of Arkansas ran a 4.54.)

Where did Robinson excel? The long jump. He leaped 127 inches over the sawdust.

Getting back to speed comparisons, the NFL’s assessment of GTDB seems to be true. By way of comparison to other WRs we know and love, here’s where that 4.60 fits in:

Jared Abbrederis, Wisconsin: 4.50
Kelvin Benjamin, FSU: 4.61
Corey Brown, tOSU: 4.51
Martavis Bryant, Clemson: 4.42
Brandin Cooks, Oregon St.: 4.33
Bennie Fowler, Moo U.: 4.52
Jeremy Gallon, Michigan: 4.49
Sammy Watkins, Clemson: 4.43

If you want to know about real speed, our friend (because he sat out our game) Dri Archer of Kent State recorded a 4.26. My recollection is that former Penn State wideout Eddie Drummond beat that mark with a 4.22 a dozen years ago.

So, what we can conclude here is that GTDB doesn’t have whatchacall “elite speed”. They talk about separation speed after the catch and the oft referred to film clip showing a DB chasing down Robinson from behind. That does not bespeak first-round speed.

Hands, now that’s a subjective area. NFL scouts will see what they see, and thus far they’ve seen Robinson catching the ball against his body, which he sometimes has to do twice to haul it in.

Only one of the WR contestants beat Robinson in the long jump, although a  couple tied him. This means that he has a certain spring in his step.

My assessment for now is that Robinson won’t go in the first round. There are just too many talented wide receivers in this pool, many of whom have the requisite speed. The best things Robinson has going for him are NFL size and leaping ability. Furthermore, I don’t see Robinson as a first-option WR in the NFL. Perhaps third, maybe, possibly, but not the main go-to guy.

Whodat Turkey?

The Nittany Turkey is a retired techno-geek who thinks he knows something about Penn State football and everything else in the world. If there's a topic, we have an opinion on it, and you know what "they" say about opinions! Most of what is posted here involves a heavy dose of hip-shooting conjecture, but unlike some other blogs, we don't represent it as fact. Read More…
