Primarily about Penn State football, this is a tale told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Sales Arrested in Pittsburgh

Posted on March 19, 2008 Written by The Nittany Turkey

Here we go again! Nittany Lion linebacker Tyrell Sales, one of the guys whose name seems to come up in connection with off-field incidents from time to time, got his ass arrested in Pittsburgh Saturday for disorderly conduct and criminal trespass. Little else is known about the Station Square incident, but a Daily Collegian story can be found here.

And, yes, friends, Terrelle Pryor has indeed committed to the Ohio State University. May he find happiness in the halls where Art Schlichter and Maurice Clarett once roamed, a school that once had a legendary coach who once punched an opposing player in the throat on national prime-time television in the Gator Bowl.

Morelli “Not Crisp” in Pro Day Workout

Posted on March 18, 2008 Written by The Nittany Turkey

Scout.com is reporting that our favorite PSU whipping boy quarterback, Mr. Anthony Morelli, did himself no favors in his Pro Day showoff drills, running 40s in a linemanlike 4.9-5.1 and appearing inconsistent and “not crisp at all” in the main quarterback workout. Tell us something we didn’t already know.

Among other NFL personnel, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin personally attended the workouts. Perhaps he wanted to see the place where his predecessor will be coaching next. (Just kidding, but RUTS has reported that Bill Cowher met with Spanier and Paterno as well as Curley when he visited University Park last month.)

Dan Connor, who missed the linebacker workouts at the NFL Scouting Combine, having gone home from that event with the flu,  looked good all around, running a 4.70 and a 4.71.

Even the forgotten man, Austin Scott, had a decent performance. However, his legal trouble and his hesitancy to hit holes of the football kind will make him iffy for the NFL.

Justin King participated in all the drills except for the 40, I suppose because he wanted to leave well enough alone after having run a 4.31 at the NFL Combine. He was said to have performed well.

One other thing. Terrelle Pryor will announce his choice this week. Just about everybody thinks it will be Ohio State, so don’t be surprised if it is. Now that he’s won the basketball championship for Jeannette, he can concentrate on ending this high drama.

Shipley Goes Off on Off-Field Shenanigans

Posted on March 8, 2008 Written by The Nittany Turkey

According to Fight On State, in response to the most recent off-field incident (that would be Andrew Quarless’ DUI and underage drinking episode), senior center A. Q. Shipley was heard to offer the following plaintive lamentations, according to one of FOS’ ubiquitous “observers”:

“[Center A.Q.] Shipley was [pissed],” an observer said. “He was going off in the locker room earlier this week. They thought he was going to hit someone. The locker room cleared out. He was yelling, ‘[Fucking] idiots. How many [fucking] times does it take to learn? [Fucking] grow a brain.’ ”

(All instances of censored verbiage were replaced by words like “ticked” and “bleeping” in the original FOS report. I replaced them with a more reasonable representation of the actual verbiage. Nobody in a locker room is “ticked” and no self-respecting offensive lineman would ever use the inoffensive word “bleeping” in a tirade. I left the original brackets in there because I don’t know—although I can conjecture—that’s what he actually said.)

In posing the rhetorical question, “How many times…?”, Shipley was referring to the previous, similar incident that caused Quarless to sit down for the beginning of the season last year. This is a valid question and one that might spell the end of Quarless’ career. Anyone can make one judgment error and get caught. Repeating the crime is the mark of a true idiot and scofflaw.

The first time around, this Turkey asked you all to give Quarless a break. After all, who among us didn’t engage in underage drinking at PSU?

This time, I’m talking out of the other side of my mouth. Quarless knew that he would hurt the team and himself if he got caught, and he significantly increased his chances of getting caught by driving drunk down a main thoroughfare. He could have at least had the sense to do his partying behind closed doors. He deserves to get his ass kicked off the team.

The once promising tight end might never fulfill his promise, either at PSU or beyond, in the NFL. Quarless has all but killed the goose that lays the golden eggs.

On the other hand, Shipley appears poised to become the senior leader we all hoped he would be.

Whodat Turkey?

The Nittany Turkey is a retired techno-geek who thinks he knows something about Penn State football and everything else in the world. If there's a topic, we have an opinion on it, and you know what "they" say about opinions! Most of what is posted here involves a heavy dose of hip-shooting conjecture, but unlike some other blogs, we don't represent it as fact. Read More…
