With the Lions enjoying the weekend off, it’s a slow news week. The Turkey, however, is not taking the week off. Correction—my liver is taking the weekend off from the usual game related overindulgence, but my mightier than the sword pen is not. Before I move on to the Land Grant Trophy game with Michigan State coming up next weekend, I want to toss in some spurious editorial comments.

Illini: The Good News and the Bad News
The NCAA had some good news and some bad news for the University of Illinois today. The good news is that the university will be allowed to use its existing nicknames, “Illini” and “Fighting Illini,” which were deemed to be connected to the name of the state and thereby, not offensive. The bad news is that Chief Illiniwek, the mascot, must go. The penalty for keeping the big chief will be a prohibition on playing in post-season tournaments.

Ten Down and One to Go
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA, November 5—Senior Day was a smashing success as the Penn State Nittany Lions (9-1, 6-1 Big Ten) took apart the Wisconsin Badgers (8-2, 5-2) in front of the second largest crowd in Beaver Stadium history. The final score was 35–14.
This win kept the Lions’ BCS bowl hopes alive. If they win their final regular season game against Michigan State, they will win the Big Ten championship outright and with it they will get an automatic BCS bowl bid. So, while it is not yet a done deal, Penn State has taken one more giant step forward toward that lofty goal.
