Akron on the Radar Screen

So, here we go! On Saturday, September 2, the 2006 Penn State Nittany Lions season kicks off at Beaver Stadium with a great spirit of optimism carried over from last year’s rags-to-riches campaign. Our first opponent: the Akron Zips. This is a good first game test of a talented group of Lions, many of whom have never before played together in a real game. And this Turkey thinks that it will be a closer game than the 16.5 point betting line indicates.

Ernesto Might Make Akron Game More Interesting

Sitting here in Central Florida, where Tropical Storm Ernesto is expected momentarily, I happened to look at a forecast map for the wet storm. I noted that the the most recently forecast path takes Ernesto to Central Pennsylvania on Saturday morning.

A Job for Kerry

Looks like Kerry Collins, quarterback of the Nittany Lions’ last undefeated Rose Bowl champion team, will be in the NFL this year after all. Recall that after starting his NFL career at Carolina, where he battled the alcohol demon, he had a brief stint with New Orleans, then went to the New York Giants for a couple of years including a Super Bowl, and was last seen in Oakland, where he was released at the end of last season in a salary cap move.

It’s That Time

“Turn in your playbook.” Lots of NFL players will be hearing that this week. It’s cut-down week, with NFL teams having to cut their squads down to 75 players by Tuesday and 53 by Saturday. The Nittany Turkey is paying attention to how Penn State rookies and veterans are doing, and we’ll keep you advised of who makes it and who doesn’t.
