Paterno Wants Another Big Ten Team

In an Ivan Maisel story on ESPN.com, Nittany Lion head coach Joe Paterno called upon the Big Ten Conference to add another team.

“I’ve tried to talk to the Big Ten people about, ‘Let’s get a 12th team — Syracuse, Rutgers, Pitt — we could have a little bit of a playoff.'”

Pitt?? Did Joe actually mention Pitt?

Stating that the rest of the conferences keep playing into December with regular games and championship games on the schedule while the Big Ten sits back for six weeks, Paterno wants more visability for the Big Ten.

However, he added that the conference is controlled by a couple of guys who essentially snicker at such ideas.

What would an expanded Big Ten be called? “Big Twelve” is taken, so how about Bigger Twelve? If played right, this could culminate in one grand pissing contest.

In a comment to another Turkey post, the Egg Man alerted me to the notion that we soon will be able to pray to John Madden when our favorite team is in trouble, because the Roman Catholic Church has taken the first step toward elevating the venerable (and now retired) football coach and announcer to sainthood. This being April, I was cynical about the whole thing, but upon checking the article’s dateline, I found that it was not April 1. This, then, is for real. Read about it here.

ESPN is reporting that Nittany Lion defensive end Pete Massaro will miss the 2009 season due to a torn right ACL suffered during the Blue White game.
